Business Method Patents

As you can imagine, the USPTO gets much criticism for some of the inventions it grants patents on. Some of the latest criticism stems from the granting of patents on what many believe to be obvious ways of doing business on the internet.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com was granted a patent on his invention, "the 1-click feature". This patent revolves around a shortcut through an internet shopping cart system (if you've ever purchased from Amazon, you may have used it). The shortcut allows customers to place an order with just "one click" of the mouse and use the shipping address and credit-card number that is stored on file for them.

The USPTO has received quite a bit of criticism for allowing this patent to issue. Many business owners consider it to be an obvious business method and hardly an invention at all.
