US Patent attorneys and agents are trained in an area of technology, usually either science or engineering and have passed a test administered by the PTO that evaluates his or her understanding of patent law. Patent atttorneys can also provide opinions on patent law, while patent agents cannot.
Patent attorneys will also possess a law degree and may help the holder of a patent in legal proceedings like infringements to help uphold their patent rights.
