Background of the invention The Background of the Invention is a portion of a patent application and generally includes two parts: the field of the invention and a description of related art. Its purpose is to describe what has been done before, what problem the invention will solve and why the previous inventions don't solve the problem.

Bar A bar prohibits the issuance of a patent. Principally, there is a one year statutory bar against the award of a patent for any invention that has been publicly disclosed or which has been sold or offered for sale.

Best mode The inventor must disclose the best way of carrying out his or her invention. That is, the inventor cannot leave out details that are necessary to making or using the invention.

Biotechnology Biotechnology relates to patents in the field living organisms and various uses of their products.

Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (Board) The Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences reviews interferences (determinations of which applicant is the first inventor of the invention) and appeals of rejections of patent application claims.

Brief summary of invention The Brief Summary of the Invention is a portion of a patent application and describes the subject matter and nature of the invention which is the subject of the patent or application.
